TILAK
It is a ritual mark made of either sandal wood paste or coloured earth or vermillion on the forehead .It is usually applied between the two eyebrows, condidered to be the seat f latent wisdom and mental concentration, which is very important for worship and
meditation.
Those who worship Vishnu as their Ishta Deva are called Vaishnavites and they apply their tilak as three vertical lines of sandalwood paste, representing the three main aspects of Godhead.
Those who worship Shiva are called Shaivites and they apply their tilak as three horizontal lines, with sacred ash (vibhuti) as the material for tilak. This again symbolises the three main aspects of the Godhead.
Those who are devotees of Devi (shakti) or the Mother Goddess apply an elongated red
mark or round mark using kumkum as material for tilak. The most common tilak for all worshippers is the round red mark on the forehead using kumkum as the material and applied after or before puja(worship).
