Varaha avatar :
Varaha refers to the boar incarnation of Vishnu, when he came on earth to save the good Varaha-avatar1and to punish the evil . It is said that in the course of the world destruction, once the earth sunk into the deep waters . Lord Vishnu , the great preserver, taking the form of a boar (Varaha ) , descended into the waters and brought up the earth with the help of his tusks .
Another version says that a demon named Hiranyaksha after years of penance had attained the boon that no man, god or beast could kill him . Somehow, the boar species was excluded from this boon . He then went out on a journey of destruction and dragged the earth to the bottom of the sea and stole the sacred Vedas . Men as well as gods, unable to bear this oppression, then appealed to Vishnu, who as the Varaha incarnation, after a battle spanning a thousand years, slayed the demon and restored the earth . He then divided it into seven continents and beautified it with valleys and mountains .
The Varaha avatar was huge in size, black in color, and had flashing eyes and fearful, white teeth . He is often seen with his face in the ground, sniffing the earth or carrying it in his arms .
